When the valve is in the "Hold-up" or "Hold-clown" position, the pump is delivering air to a reservoir for use when "single" blows are required.

To reduce the load on the pump when sufficient air has been stored, a controller is fitted to the side of the pump cylinder. This consists of a piston valve which when opened throws the pump into communica­tion with the atmosphere during the first part of each stroke. The effective stroke of the piston is thus reduced, only sufficient air being compressed to make up for leakage from the reservoir.

The valve is moved by a small piston sliding in a cylinder formed in the bottom cover of the controller, and connected by piping to the reservoir.

The weight of the valve determines the pressure at which it lifts, and it will be seen that there is thus nothing to get out of adjustment. The only attention required is an occasional test to see that the valve rises and falls freely. For this purpose an indicating rod attacked to the valve projects through the top cover, and by means of it the freedom of the valve may be gauged by hand.
